CHICAGO — Labor remains a challenging issue for the convenience-store and other retail channels as the pandemic continues and even as it appears that COVID may be retreating as more people get vaccinated.
Throughout the pandemic, c-store retailers and distributors have held hiring days, and many are holding new events.
Chains that have recently announced hiring days include Sheetz, Pilot and Murphy USA, as well as wholesaler McLane. …

With more than 55 stores located in those areas preparing for the summer season, the recruiting campaign launches March 7 and will continue throughout the summer season.
This annual employment effort is focused primarily on filling the seasonal jobs needed to support summer store operations.
Associates hired in full- and part-time positions receive competitive salaries, which now include a starting wage for hourly store associates of $15 per hour. a comprehensive package of financial and personal benefits that include health and wellness benefits, tuition reimbursement an annual 401(k) match. Associates who stay with Wawa will share in the company’s success through its Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP).
Employment includes a free Shorti sandwich every shift and an associate food menu with deeply discounted food items. The chain offers flexible schedules, ongoing engagement events and care and recognition programs.

Sheetz Inc., Altoona, Pa., plans to hire 3,500 employees company wide and will host several in-person hiring days across the states in which it operates starting this March.
The hiring drive follows Sheetz’s investment of more than $70 million in store employee wages in 2021. It also follows an investment doubling the tuition assistance that the company offers to employees through its college tuition reimbursement program. And it comes on the heels of a recent pay increase for overnight workers as Sheetz is providing an additional $1.50 per hour for store employees who work the 10 p.m.-6 a.m. shift.
Sheetz offers competitive pay and benefits packages to all employees, including medical and dental insurance, a 401(k) retirement plan, an employee stock ownership plan, flexible schedules, opportunities for advancement, quarterly bonuses, vacation time and more. Sheetz also offers 12 weeks of fully paid time off for new mothers and two weeks of fully paid time off for partners.

The company and its team of nearly 15,000 employees serve an estimated 2 million customers each day through its network of retail gasoline and convenience stations in 27 states. Most of Murphy USA’s sites are located in proximity to Walmart stores. The company also markets gasoline and other products at standalone stores under the Murphy Express and QuickChek brands.

Inc., Temple, Texas, hosted its second annual National Hiring Day on Feb. 25, with a goal of hiring more than 2,000 people for career opportunities as drivers or as warehouse teammates.
The convenience-store supply chain services company has full- and part-time roles available for qualified applicants aged 18 and older for warehouse and 21 and older for drivers, including overnight and daytime jobs, it said.
It offers health care benefits, a 401(k) retirement plan with employer match, paid holidays, vacation, tuition assistance and time-off based on years of service.
Candidates applied in person at McLane’s 71 distribution centers nationwide. Applicants met hiring managers and some received on-the-spot offers.
McLane provides grocery and foodservice solutions for convenience stores, mass merchants, drug stores and chain restaurants. Through McLane Grocery and McLane Foodservice, it operates more than 80 distribution centers and one of the nation’s largest private fleets. The company buys, sells and delivers more than 50,000 consumer products to nearly 110,000 locations across the United States. Additionally, McLane provides alcoholic beverage distribution through its subsidiary, Empire Distributors Inc. McLane is a wholly owned unit of Berkshire Hathaway Inc., Omaha.
